Google Ads or Meta Ads? Which Is Better for Your Business?

Choosing between Google Ads and Meta Ads depends on whether people are actively searching for your product or service or discovering it while browsing content. Available advertising materials, expected results, budget and measurement options shape the decision.

Back to Articles

The question of whether to use Google Ads or Meta Ads cannot be answered simply by comparing audience size or cost per click. Google Search reaches people while they are actively searching for a product or service. Meta Ads appear while people are browsing content on Facebook or Instagram. This difference directly affects the advertising message, the materials required and how the campaign should be planned.

However, the distinction between the two platforms is not absolute. Google Ads offers advertising options beyond its Search network, while Meta Ads can generate direct results such as forms, messages, website actions and sales in addition to promoting a product or service. The right channel to start with depends on the result expected from advertising, the materials that can be prepared, the available budget and how results can be measured.

First decide what you expect advertising to achieve

Before choosing a channel, you need to decide what result you want advertising to produce for your business. Phone calls, form submissions, messages, reservations, store visits, purchases and the promotion of a new product all require different campaign and measurement approaches. Whether that result takes place on the platform, over the phone, in a physical store or on your website also affects the choice of channel.

Different channels may be suitable for different products or services offered by the same business. Active search demand may be particularly important for an urgent local service. A new product that people do not yet know about may instead require advertising materials that can introduce it and generate interest.

As a starting point, complete the following sentence:

We want to reach ___ audience for ___ product or service and generate ___ as a result of advertising.

This statement will not define every detail of the campaign, but it makes the business objective clear. You can then establish how the expected result will be verified: a form submission, phone call, message, reservation, store visit, purchase or another result recorded by your business.

Google Ads and Meta Ads: A quick comparison

This comparison does not establish strict boundaries between the platforms. On either channel, the expected result must be clear, enough budget and time must be available to evaluate the campaign, the necessary measurement must be in place and the advertisements must be managed regularly. The right channel to start with should be selected according to the business objective, available advertising materials, existing account data, measurement options, advertising policies and technical requirements.

When can Google Ads be a suitable starting point?

Google Search ads can be a suitable starting point when people express their need for a product or service by searching for it. Searches that include a product or service name, location, price or specific type of service provide direct context about what the person wants. However, not every search has the same commercial value or purchase intent.

Consider the following conditions when evaluating Google Ads as your starting channel:

  • People in your target area should be searching for terms related to your product or service.
  • Those searches should correspond to the products, services and working conditions you actually offer.
  • People who encounter the ad should be able to continue to a relevant web page, phone line, form, store, reservation process or purchase step.
  • Results such as phone calls, forms, reservations, store visits or sales should be tracked whenever possible.
  • Enough time and budget should be available to evaluate the campaign under the relevant local and competitive conditions.
  • The searches triggering the advertisements should be reviewed regularly, and irrelevant searches should be excluded.

High search volume does not automatically represent a valuable advertising opportunity. The relevance of those searches to your business, the level of competition, estimated costs, the value generated by the product or service and your capacity to handle incoming enquiries must be considered together.

Google Ads is not limited to Search campaigns. Depending on the campaign objective and the materials available, other advertising placements using product data, images or video may also be considered.

When can Meta Ads be a suitable starting point?

Meta Ads appear while people are browsing content on Facebook or Instagram. Because they may not be searching for your product or service at that moment, the advertisement must quickly explain what it offers and why it may be relevant to them.

Consider the following conditions when evaluating Meta Ads as your starting channel:

  • Your product or service should be explainable clearly through text, images, video or a practical example.
  • A product, service, event or offer that people are not actively searching for should be suitable for introduction through advertising.
  • People who encounter the ad should be able to continue to a form on the platform, a message, a phone line, a relevant web page or a purchase step.
  • Different versions of the advertising copy, images or videos should be available and renewable based on performance.
  • Results such as forms, messages, phone calls, website actions or sales should be tracked whenever possible.
  • Incoming enquiries should be handled promptly, and their progress through the sales process should be recorded.
  • Enough budget and time should be available to evaluate the selected audience, location and campaign objective.

Meta Ads is not limited to generating awareness. Campaigns can also be planned around direct results such as forms, messages, phone calls, website actions and sales. Success should be evaluated through the quality of the enquiries and their progress through the sales process, rather than simply through low reach or click costs.

Three examples: Choosing a channel for different situations

The following hypothetical examples illustrate how the choice between Google Ads and Meta Ads can change depending on the business situation. The actual decision should be made after reviewing the business objective, existing data, available budget and practical requirements.

1. An urgent local service

Someone may be searching for a nearby service because they need to solve a problem quickly and want to contact the business by phone. When there is clear search demand, a defined service area and a direct communication objective, Google Search may be the first channel to consider.

Choosing the channel is only part of the preparation. The ads must be shown in the right locations, the service conditions must be stated clearly and the phone line must be able to handle incoming enquiries. The number and quality of calls generated through advertising should also be compared with the business’s own records whenever possible.

2. A new product that can be introduced through advertising

A new product may not yet receive enough searches for its name or category. However, if the problem it solves, how it is used or the benefit it provides can be explained quickly through text, images, video or a practical example, Meta Ads may offer a suitable starting point.

Audience selection alone is not enough in this situation. The advertising materials must explain the product clearly. The form, message conversation or product page that follows must also provide the necessary information about price, features, purchasing conditions and the next step. The ability to renew the advertising materials over time also makes the campaign easier to evaluate.

3. A service with a longer decision process

For some services, people first become aware of a need, research their options, compare different providers and only then make contact. Meta Ads can introduce the service or the problem it addresses earlier in this process. Google Search can then become relevant when the person later searches for the service, its category or the name of the business.

When the necessary permissions and technical conditions are in place, showing Meta advertisements to people who have previously visited the website may also be considered. This allows the two channels to support different stages of the decision process instead of attempting to produce the same result.

The advertisement and the next step are as important as the channel

Choosing the right channel is not enough on its own. The advertisement must explain clearly what is being offered, and people must be able to complete the expected action easily. With Google Search, the search, advertising copy and destination page or action must be consistent. With Meta Ads, the advertising message must align with the information provided through the form, message conversation, phone call or web page that follows.

Consider the following questions before launching a campaign:

  • Is it immediately clear which product, service or campaign the advertisement is promoting?
  • Does the form, message conversation, phone line or web page that follows provide the same information and conditions?
  • Do the form, messaging, phone, reservation and purchase processes work properly on mobile devices?
  • Are people asked only for the information required for communication or purchasing?
  • Can incoming forms, messages and phone calls be answered promptly?
  • Can the relationship between the advertisement and the expected result be established as far as possible?

If a new landing page or substantial changes to the existing website are required, this work should be planned separately before the campaign begins. Necessary changes can be considered as part of our Web Design and Development service. If professional photography or video production is required, its responsibility and scope should also be established clearly in the campaign plan.

Your budget determines the campaign scope and evaluation period

The advertising budget depends on the target location, level of competition, expected result, estimated costs and the amount of time required to evaluate the campaign. There is therefore no single starting budget that applies to every business or campaign.

Dividing a limited budget between Google Ads and Meta Ads from the beginning may prevent either channel from producing enough results for a meaningful evaluation. In that situation, starting with the priority channel and considering the second channel after reviewing the initial results may provide a clearer assessment.

The order of the initial work can be planned as follows:

  • Select the priority channel by evaluating active demand for the product or service and the advertising materials that can be prepared.
  • Establish the result expected from advertising and how that result will be tracked.
  • Allocate enough budget and time to evaluate the selected channel.
  • Review platform data together with the quality of incoming enquiries and sales records.
  • Use the results to decide whether to continue with the first channel, change the approach or add the second channel.

Advertising spend is the amount paid to Google or Meta to run the advertisements. Campaign management, professional image or video production, landing pages and other website work may involve separate costs. When planning the total budget, you should also consider your business’s ability to handle incoming enquiries and track their progress through the sales process.

Clicks alone do not show the result of advertising

Google Ads and Meta Ads provide data about reach, impressions, clicks, video views and other interactions on their platforms. This data shows how the ads were distributed and how people interacted with them. The result that matters to the business often occurs later: a phone call, message, form submission, reservation, purchase or revenue.

The same form submission or sale may appear differently in the advertising platform, analytics system, CRM and the business’s own records. Differences in attribution, changes between devices, user consent, browser restrictions, incomplete measurement connections and offline sales can all cause these discrepancies. A report from one platform therefore cannot fully explain the result achieved by the business.

Three groups of data should be considered together when evaluating a campaign:

  • Advertising data: Shows how many people saw the ads, how much interaction they received and how much was spent.
  • Communication and sales records: Show how many forms, phone calls, messages, reservations or purchases occurred.
  • Business outcomes: Show how closely the enquiries matched the products or services offered, how they progressed through the sales process and what value they generated for the business.

The relationship between advertising and business outcomes cannot always be established with complete certainty. Even so, comparing these sources over the same periods provides a more reliable understanding of the campaign’s contribution. A low cost per click or form submission does not automatically mean success. A smaller number of relevant enquiries may be more valuable than a large number of applications that produce no result.

When can both channels be used together?

Google Ads and Meta Ads can work together when they perform different roles instead of repeating the same campaign on two platforms. For example, Meta Ads may introduce a product or service earlier in the decision process, while Google Ads reaches people who are actively searching for it.

Each channel should have its own objective, budget, advertising materials and evaluation criteria. Form submissions or sales reported by the platforms should not simply be added together; they must be compared with analytics data, communication records and actual sales results. If there is not enough budget, material or operational capacity to evaluate both channels separately, starting with the priority channel may be more suitable.

Google Ads or Meta Ads: How do you choose the right channel?

There is no single answer that applies to every business. If the priority is reaching active search demand, Google Search may be a suitable starting point. If you need to introduce a product or service to people who are not yet searching for it, Meta Ads may be more appropriate. The choice should be based on the expected result, the advertising materials that can be prepared, the available budget, measurement options and the business’s capacity to handle incoming enquiries.
